Early History of Almero

Almero was modified version of an Athol Burns design. Roydon Thomas built her with his friends Alan and Mervyn Benge who were neighbours in Seatoun. The building of Almero started in 1949. Roydon’s father helped out with the finance and building supplies over the four years Almero was being built at the Evans Bay boatshed. Almero had kauri planking and hardwood ribs. She was launched on 18 October 1952 at Evans Bay in Wellington.

Postscript: In 2020 Georgi bought Almero in Russell. She was then named Kikitoo. He renamed her back to the original name, Almero.

  1. Hi David,

Thank you very much for the article re the early history of Almero. I bought her from Mr Helme Heine from Russel on 01.02.2020. She was named Kikitoo, but I decide to put her very original name Almero.

      • Hi David,
Thank you for the postscript. I was wondering if there are some technical data, any drawings or early photos still available?
In the next couple of days we will sail her down to Sandspit Marina when she will be moored on piles. I have some recent photos which I can send if any interest.
